Trivia Moment: E-Mail and Abe Lincoln
Author Tom Wheeler’s new book:  Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mail  makes it clear that President Lincoln would have been an avid E-mailer.  In his day, the telegraph office was a beehive of activity and Lincoln was one of the busiest of the bees. During election campaigns, Abe would virtually move into the local telegraph office.  He would read over the operator’s shoulder as the latter deciphered the dots and dashes. In the midst of the Civil War, Lincoln sent hundreds of telegraphs (protected by a code that was never broken).  Interestingly, he understood and practiced a hierarchy of communication. The type he used depended on the situation and the persuasion need.  Person-to-person was at the top. Letter writing was next, then speeches. Telegraph messages, mostly for spur-of-the-moment communication, followed.
