Direct Mail Quickie: Check with your Post Office

Avoid costly mailing errors

Not knowing the postal regulations can cause a heap of problems.  And knowing all the regulations is not an easy task!

Common problems

.  Wrong indicia/no indicia, when it is used instead of stamps or meter postage

.  Wrong weight, hence insufficient postage

.  Wrong card stock for postcards, self mailers, reply cards

.  Wrong amount of space for barcode zone

.  Wrong “aspect ratio” for size of letter

 Recommendations

 (1) Clear every mail program with your local post office.

(2) Consider using a third party to handle your mail programs---a mail house.

(3) Study regulations and services posted at www.usps.com.

Cost and management time savings

We strongly urge our clients to work with an authorized mail house.  We have a resource that we use regularly---a printing and mail house. They know the regulations. They do pre-sorting.  They cleanse agency customer and prospect lists to make sure they meet USPS compliance standards.  They de-dupe lists.  They make sure that mail drop schedules are kept.  And more.

And, most importantly, through pre-sorting and other handling procedures, they are able to reduce First Class mail costs for letters, newsletters, fliers, etc., from 42 cents to an average of 24 cents a mailing----from $420 for 1000 mailings to $240.
