AGENCY DEVELOPMENT: Marketing and sales distinct

Sales is part of the marketing process

We get this question often:  what’s the difference between marketing and sales?  It is a good question.  The terms are often used interchangeably.  However, there is a difference that affects your planning and implementation business processes.

Sales is PART of the marketing process.  It is the end part of the process.  In the sales phase, you contact potential clients and convince them to use your agency’s services.  It is often a one-to-one contact.

Marketing is the BIG PICTURE part.  We think of marketing as focusing on many people and organizations at once.  Hence, marketing research, marketing goals and marketing steps to define the size, location, key needs, and profitability of a prospect universe.

These steps are followed by marketing communications objectives, strategies and tactics to reach large numbers within that universe, and by sales tactics to quote and close individuals within that universe. Summary: Marketing is a broader effort.  Sales is a specifically defined, concentrated effort.

You need both mindsets and activities that support them to grow profitably.
