Agency Development: Management by Inspiration

Dov Seidman interviewed by Friedman and Rose

Dov Seidman, CEO of LRN, a governance, ethics and compliance services company, has a hot new book HOW: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything…In Business (And In Life).  He recently held discussions with The World Is Flat author Tom Friedman at the National Press Club, and with Charlie Rose on his PBS show.  What Seidman has to say about managing and getting things done in today’s world of connectedness is provocative.  And it has application for your agency and your family too.

In a nutshell

Seidman discusses three management models.  Management by coercion where fear rules (“it is our way or the highway”).  Management by motivation (“carrots n’ sticks” incentives) and inspiration (“common values and beliefs connect us”).

His view is that, in today’s flat and open world, businesses, individuals and families need to manage their affairs by inspiration. People must collaborate with one another in positive ways with common purpose in order to achieve their goals.  In short, HOW we do things in connection with others is at a premium.
